The Famous XX® Trademark

The history of the trademark goes back to the early days of W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co., when the “XX” was used as a quality check system during the process of heat treating. When blades were put through the initial hardening furnace, an “X” was marked on the pan holding the blades. When the blades were returned to the oven for tempering, a second “X” was added. “XX” then, showed that each blade had been properly and fully treated. Today the “Case XX” trademark is a sign of distinction and quality which we proudly place on nearly every knife we make.

Proper Knife Use

You expect Case to deliver high-quality, razor sharp knives, and in turn, each Case blade is honed to an extremely sharp edge. We ask that you be very cautious when opening, closing, using, sharpening or handling your knife in any way. Case knives are tools used exclusively for cutting applications. They are not designed to be, nor should they EVER be used as, an awl, chisel, pry-bar, punch, screwdriver, or weapon. Use for any purpose other than cutting applications in a safe, unharmful manner shall be deemed misuse.

Locking Blade Safety Notice

Always use extreme caution when using any Case knife equipped with a locking feature. Although locking features are designed to help prevent the blade from unexpectedly closing on the hand of the user, NO locking feature can ensure the blade will remain locked during use. It is possible for a user to accidentally disengage the locking feature or for the locking feature to be overcome by force to the blade, especially from pressure exerted on the blade's side or back. For optimal safety, always treat and use your Case knife with a locking feature just as you would use any folding pocket knife that is not equipped with a locking feature. Be sure the locking mechanism is clean and free from debris or dirt before use. Case cannot be held responsible for any misuse of any Case knife or any user's failure to heed these instructions and warnings.

The Case Edge

The Case name is synonymous with extraordinarily keen edges which are individually honed by the hands of skilled artisans.

Case uses only quality steel, special ordered and tested to fit our demanding specifications. The most used are our original Chrome Vanadium (CV), Carbon Steel (CS), and our stainless option, Tru-Sharp™ surgical steel (SS). Other specialty steels may be used on occasion.

Carbon Steel (CS) and Chrome Vanadium (CV) are quality high carbon steels with low alloy content and high tensile strength. They are in a class of steels where carbon is a principal element (“carbon” steels). CV and CS blades are known for their edge retention and ease of re-sharpening. They are, however, more prone to tarnishing and rusting than stainless steel when exposed to air and moisture.

Case Tru-Sharp™ surgical steel (SS) is a high strength stainless steel alloy which contains a higher Chromium content. It resists tarnishing, staining and rusting with minimal care. As with any knife, stainless blades should be maintained regularly to preserve the steel's original appearance.

When purchasing a knife, the decision between CV, CS, stainless steel, or other steels is largely one of personal preference. Some feel that edge retention, ease of re-sharpening, and the patina that can be achieved with CV and CS blades makes it superior to stainless steel; others appreciate the added corrosion resistance and dependable performance of stainless steel. You can be sure that both steels are made to our highest quality standards and, with proper care, can perform well for many years.

Re-sharpening Your Knife

Hold the blade at a 10° to 15° angle from the surface of a sharpening stone. Maintain the angle and stroke the blade, as if “shaving” a thin layer from the stone. Repeat the stroking motion along the entire edge of the blade starting at the blade heel and working to the tip. Turn the blade over and repeat the process on the opposite side.

Knife Care

Proper care, maintenance, and use of your Case knife will help prevent injury to you or anyone else and will help to ensure many years of faithful service.

To prevent corrosion, clean your Case knife entirely (exterior and interior) after use. Remove any dirt or debris from the inside with cotton swabs. Blades can be cleaned with a damp cloth and wiped dry with a clean, dry cloth. Prior to storing, lightly coat the blade and any pivot points with lubricating oil.

IMPORTANT: Extra care of Chrome Vanadium and Carbon Steel blades is required. Simply maintain a thin film of oil, wax or other preservative on them to help retain their original finish.

Even when properly cared for, CV and CS blades will darken in color over time and can develop a rich patina, which does not affect the steel's integrity or performance. Other specialty steels may require care that is unique to that steel. Refer to any additional care instructions that may have been included in your product packaging.

The Case Limited Lifetime Warranty

We warrant each and every Case knife to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the owner, and we will repair or replace with a new Case knife, at our option, any Case knife that is defective. That's how strongly we feel about the quality of our cutlery. See our Repair Statement below if you believe your Case knife has a manufacturing defect or needs repair.

Case does not warrant its products or their finish against normal wear or misuse. Case knives are not intended to be used as hammers, chisels, pry bars or screw drivers. If your knife was damaged due to misuse, our repair department can analyze the damage and repair it for a reasonable fee. This Warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may have other rights which vary by area.

Repair Statement

As stated in our warranty, Case will attempt to repair any knife that may have a defect in materials or workmanship. If you believe your Case knife has a manufacturing defect or needs repair, please complete our online form at www.caseknives.com/pages/warranty-repair-request-form to obtain return authorization. Then follow the simple steps provided to send us your automatic knife for service – Due to federal and state laws, we ask that you do not ship your Case Automatic Knife directly back to us. Please take if back to an Authorized Dealer (list can be found at www.caseknives.com/pages/find-a-dealer) or contact Case Consumer Relations at +1 (888) 442-1932 for specific instructions.

NOTE: We ask that you do not send your Case Automatic Knife directly to Case. Federal and State Laws could prohibit the transit of such knives. Please use the knowledge of our dealer network to help you in your repair.

If your issue is deemed warranted and repairs cannot be made, we will offer you a new knife from our current product line that most closely matches the item sent in for repair. However, if the knife holds sentimental value or is a collector's item and cannot be repaired, Case is not responsible for offering a replacement or repayment that is equal in value.
